Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham United Match Preview

The upcoming London derby between ‘The Irons’ and ‘The Lilywhites’ holds great significance for both sides for largely different reasons. Despite their undeniably inconsistent season so far, where Conte’s men have only won 3 premier league games in a row once, Tottenham will play to secure their place in the top four with a win this weekend. On the other hand, The Hammers have found themselves in the relegation battle with only 20 points from 22 games so far this season.

Although Tottenham continued their long-lasting dominance over Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a 1-0 victory, their performance away at the King Power Stadium raised several question marks. The 4-1 defeat against Leicester City saw Tottenham completely outplayed, with Hugo Lloris and Cristian Romero the only notable absentees. Also important to note is Tottenham’s most recent 1-0 defeat against A.C Milan in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 matchup. The largely uninspiring performance saw Tottenham fail to create a single big chance, a slight concern for Tottenham leading into this London Derby.

The Hammers horrendous 7 game period from the 30th of October until the 21st of January where they picked up 1 out of 24 possible points firmly placed them in the mix amongst other relegation candidates. Following on from this major dip in form, Moyes’ team picked up all 3 points against relegation rivals Everton and secured two 1-1 draws against Newcastle and Chelsea. The draw against the West London Blues came with some controversy though, as Tomas Soucek’s unpunished handball inside the box late on in the game allowed West Ham to hold onto the point. Their recent success in the F.A Cup will also encourage West Ham supporters, with wins against Premier League rivals Brentford and League 1 side Derby County since the turn of the year.

Team News

The North London outlet will be without club captain Hugo Lloris once again as his knee injury will see him miss at least another 6 weeks of football. Rotation players Ryan Sessegnon and Yves Bissouma will both be unfit for tonight’s clash with their respective injuries, as well as dominant central midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur. The Uruguayan’s season ending ACL injury against the foxes will be a noticeable loss for Spurs for the remainder of the season. On the sidelines, Antonio Conte will not lead his team out against West Ham as he stays in Italy following a post-operation check that followed his recent gallbladder surgery.

West Ham’s ongoing injury crisis continued as Lucas Paqueta’s first half withdrawal against Chelsea further increased The Hammers injury woes. The Brazilian’s shoulder injury will see him be left out of the clash against Tottenham, along with winter signing Naif Aguerd who was an 80th minute substitute last time out for West Ham. Alphonso Areola, Kurt Zouma, Gianluca Scamacca and Maxwell Cornet will continue their injury spell away from the squad and miss the upcoming game.

Tottenham’s Predicted Lineup

Although Antonio Conte will not be on the touchline at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend, there is no doubt that Spurs will lineup with their trusted 3-4-2-1 formation. Pape Matar Sarr in Tottenham’s midweek loss to the Rossoneri had a shining performance on a poor night for The Lilywhites, which could see the Senegalese midfielder lineup alongside Pierre-Emile Hojberg after he served his one match Champions League ban midweek. Kulusevski’s recent lack of form could see Brazilian Richarlison come into the lineup and start for Tottenham for the first time since the 12th of November.

Predicted Lineup: Forster, Romero, Dier, Davies, Porro, Sarr, Hojberg, Perisic, Richarlison, Kane, Son

West Ham’s Predicted Lineup

With West Ham generating 5 points out of a possible 9 for only the second time this season, Moyes will likely stick to the 3-4-2-1 which helped him gain those valuable points over the last 3 games. Paqueta’s absence will most probably see Czech international Tomas Soucek inserted back into the double pivot with club captain Declan Rice. Aguerd’s injury leaves space for Ben Johnson to return to the lineup, with the West Ham Academy graduate having not started in the league since the 25th of October in West Ham’s 2-0 win against Bournemouth.

Predicted Lineup: Fabianski, Kehrer, Ogbonna, Johnson, Coufal, Rice, Soucek, Emerson, Bowen , Benrahma, Antonio
