The fiercest derby in football is back: Boca Juniors vs. River Plate

What are the 50 sporting things you must do before you die? This is the question that The Observer newspaper asked as part of its 50th birthday celebrations. The ensuing list included 50 incredible sporting events.

Top of the list was the Argentinian Superclasico, a match defined as ‘a riot of colour, noise and energy.’

This is a game that splits the nation, divides a city, and captivates an entire world. This is Boca Juniors vs. River Plate. This Sunday, the Superclasico is back.

In the hallowed realm of football rivalries, where passion often eclipses reason and the pitch becomes a battleground of emotions, few, if any, contests stand as tall and fierce as the clash between Boca Juniors and River Plate.

As the dust settles on the cobblestone streets of Buenos Aires and the city’s iconic stadiums prepare to host another chapter of this enduring rivalry, the world braces itself for a spectacle like no other. Indeed, the Boca Juniors vs. River Plate showdown is a fixture that ranks among the fiercest and most intense derbies in the entire footballing universe.

The history between these two Argentine giants is a tale woven with blood, sweat, and tears, and it reads like a gripping novel of epic proportions. Rooted in the heart of Buenos Aires, this rivalry is as much about geography as it is about tradition and pride. Boca Juniors, the club from the working-class neighbourhood of La Boca, represents the grit and determination of the people, while River Plate, hailing from the more affluent district of Núñez, embodies elegance and sophistication.

This stark contrast in backgrounds has set the stage for decades of fierce competition, spilling over into a rivalry that goes beyond football, into the very fabric of Argentine society. With a dark history coloured by intense confrontations, bitter feuds, and unforgettable moments, the Boca vs. River clash is not just a football match; it’s a cultural phenomenon that defines a nation’s sporting identity.

In May, during the two sides’ previous encounter, tensions spilt over, even by the fierce standards of this game. Six players were sent off in added time after a massive 15-minute brawl was sparked by River Plate scoring a 90th-minute penalty to beat Boca.

Stewards and riot police had to interfere to help split the teams up and when matters finally cooled down, the referee gave three players their marching orders from each side as well as the Boca coach, Jorge Almiron.

Today, tensions are expected to remain high as they battle it out in the Copa de la Liga Profesional Argentina. Legendary striker Edinson Cavani will get his first taste of a Superclasico as he now plies his trade for Boca, alongside fellow former Manchester United players Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo.

Boca Juniors are the underdogs, priced at 13/5 on bet365. River Plate are expected to win, demonstrated by their 11/10 pricing on bet365.

Whatever happens, expect drama, passion and unadulterated pride as the Superclasico takes place for the 260th time…
