The Taylor Swift Effect: Did Kelce Accidentally “Shake it Off?”
Since legendary singer Taylor Swift attended her first Chiefs game of the season on September 24, 2023, to cheer on her boyfriend, Swift, and NFL fans have been invested in seeing how this relationship will play out both on and off the field. The Kansas City Chiefs tight end’s new relationship has brought a lot of attention to the Super Bowl LVII champions. Throughout the season, fans have been quick to note how this relationship would affect the Chiefs’ tight end, Travis Kelce’s, on-field performance.

NFL and Taylor Swift fans alike have been watching the Chiefs and Kelce throughout this 2023-24 season to see how they perform in conjunction with which games Swift attends. Following recent matches, the Chiefs have been 4-2 when Swift is in attendance, with Kelce having 44 catches for 596 yards and two touchdowns.
The following are statistics from the six Chiefs games that Taylor Swift was in attendance:
- September 24, 2023: Chiefs vs Chicago Bears (41-10)- Kelce had 7 catches for 69 yards and 1 touchdown
- October 1, 2023: Chiefs vs New York Jets (23-20)- Kelce had 6 catches for 60 yards
- October 12, 2023: Chiefs vs Denver Broncos (19-8)- Kelce had 9 catches for 124 yards
- October 22, 2023: Chiefs vs Los Angeles Chargers (31-17)- Kelce had 12 catches for 179 yards and 1 touchdown
- December 3, 2023: Chiefs vs Green Bay Packers (19-27)- Kelce had 4 catches for 81 yards
- December 10, 2023: Chiefs vs Buffalo Bills (17-20)- Kelce had 6 catches for 83 yards
Following her attendance at the October 22 game against the Chargers, the legendary singer took a hiatus from attending games. Swift flew to South America to complete the final leg of her 2023 Eras Tour with performances in Argentina and Brazil. Fans were shocked when Kelce made an appearance in the crowd of her Buenos Aires show.
After concluding her 2023 Eras Tour, the legendary singer returned to the stands to cheer on her boyfriend as she attended the Chiefs’ recent two games. Despite Swift’s attendance, the team’s good luck charm seems to have worn off. On December 3, 2023, in the Chiefs game against the Packers, the team broke their streak of winning every game while Swift was in attendance. While Kelce managed to secure 80+ yards in each of his last two games, the Chiefs still fell short of clinching a win against the Packers or Bills. Could Swift’s hiatus have affected the team’s performance?

While the Kansas City team has gone 4-2 with Swift in attendance, after recent games, the team’s record for the 7 games that Swift did not attend is 4-3. Kelce had his lowest receiving yard games amidst Swift’s absence, running 14 yards in the Chiefs’ international match against the Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany. While Kelce made franchise history in that game for the most receiving yards, those 14 yards are his lowest running yards statistics of the 2023-24 season.
Not only did the Eras Tour singer serve as a good luck charm for the Kansas City franchise for most of the season, but she also seemingly influenced NFL viewership and Travis Kelce’s off-field statistics. Following the very first game of the season that Swift had attended, the NFL’s female viewership increased, Travis saw a 400% increase in jersey sales, the Kelce brothers’ New Heights podcast was ranked #1 on Apple, and the tight end has gained well over 2 million followers on Instagram since being linked with Swift.

The Kansas City Chiefs are currently the first team in the AFC West, and the franchise has four games left in the regular season. While Swift seemed to be the team’s good luck charm for a majority of the games she attended, the Chiefs’ last two games seem to show that the “Swift Effect” might have worn off. The singer’s international leg of her Eras Tour will resume on February 7, 2024, when she performs in Tokyo. The legendary singer will be able to attend the remainder of the Chiefs’ regular season games, and she will have time to cheer on her boyfriend for numerous playoff games before resuming her international tour. Will the Chiefs get their good luck charm back in time for the remainder of the season and the playoffs, or has their good luck worn off?
