When watching old footage of 1960s Manchester United games, many of the players look slow, sluggish, and uncouth on the ball compared to the players we see in the modern game. Not Sir Bobby. Even viewing through the pixelated, dated, black-and-white footage, Sir Bobby stands out for his delicate touch, beautiful ball striking, and intelligent play. That’s the sign of a footballing legend.
It was on the international stage that Sir Bobby truly made a global name for himself. He represented England with distinction, earning 106 caps and scoring 49 goals for his country. His greatest achievement came in 1966 when he was a vital part of the England team that won the FIFA World Cup on home soil. His thrilling long-range goals and remarkable vision on the field endeared him to fans across the globe. He is often considered England’s greatest-ever player.

Gary Lineker, a fellow England great, reaffirmed that Charlton was England’s greatest-ever player. “He may no longer be with us but he’ll have footballing immortality.”

A few hours after he passed, Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot scored a beautiful goal, curled from the edge of the box to win United the game. Some of the lucky, older, fans in the away end will have had the fortune of watching Sir Bobby do the exact same so many times for the Red Devils and for England. It was a fitting tribute for Charlton.
