Manchester City vs Fluminense: Club World Cup Final 2023 – Preview
The champions of Europe and South America face off in the 20th FIFA Club World Cup final as Manchester City battle Fluminense at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Friday night. With rich histories and passionate fanbases backing them, this final is set to be a thrilling display of cross-continental football. As the stage is set for this epic encounter, anticipation mounts, and the footballing universe eagerly awaits the crowning of a new global champion.
Despite winning just one of their last six games, Manchester City brushed aside the Urawa Reds 3-0 to reach the final. Fluminense comfortably beat Al-Ahly to reach the final.
Team News:
Manchester City are still in the wars, but some of their players are recovering. They are still without Kevin de Bruyne. Erling Haaland suffered a knock against Aston Villa earlier this month and is out for the tournament. Tricky Belgian winger Jeremy Doku will also miss out.
Fluminense have a relatively clean bill of health and should be able to field a full-strength line-up. Left-back Jorge misses out with an injury whilst centre-back Manoel, striker Lelê and midfielder Leo Fernandez are doubtful with injuries. Striker German Cano is expected to start and is one of the world’s top scorers in 2023 with 40 goals this year.
Key Players:
Manchester City: Ruben Dias
For City, the towering presence of Ruben Dias looms large. The Portuguese center-back is a defensive stalwart who boasts impeccable positioning, remarkable tackling ability, and leadership qualities crucial in thwarting opponents’ attacks. His composure under pressure and knack for timely interceptions have solidified City’s defense, making him a linchpin in their pursuit of global glory. If anyone is going to prevent German Cano from continuing his incredible year, it’ll be Dias.
Fluminense: Marcelo
Meanwhile, Fluminense pins their hopes on the experienced Marcelo. The seasoned, four-time Champions League winner brings a wealth of skill, vision, and finesse to the field. Marcelo’s creative flair, adept ball control, and precise passing make him a driving force in Fluminense’s offensive maneuvers. His ability to unlock defenses and orchestrate play could prove pivotal in breaching Manchester City’s formidable backline.
Victory on Friday night would see Manchester City become the fourth English team after Manchester United (2008), Liverpool (2019), and Chelsea (2021) to win the Club World Cup, as well as the first to celebrate success in their maiden appearance at the tournament.
Fluminense, who won the Copa Libertadores for the first time in their storied history, are now striving to replicate fellow Brazilian side Corinthians, who were the last non-European team to win the Club World Cup when they secured a surprising 1-0 victory over Chelsea in 2012.
Manchester City are the clear favorite, at 1/6 to lift the trophy on bet365. Fluminense are 5/1 to lift the trophy also on bet365.
