Liverpool Breathing Down Man City’s Necks

It was Manchester City’s title to lose and they could well be on the verge of losing it. City opened up a 12-point gap over Liverpool on the 10th of February, fast forward five weeks and the Reds now have the chance to go within one point of the reigning Premier League champions.

When they went 12 points clear at the summit, City had played two games more than their closest challengers Liverpool. In their last 10 league games the Citizens have dropped seven points with draws at Southampton and Crystal Palace as well as a home loss to Tottenham. Liverpool, meanwhile, are currently on an eight-game winning streak and have collected a stellar 28 points from their last 30 on offer.

Liverpool visit Arsenal on Wednesday and victory at the Emirates Stadium would take Jürgen Klopp’s men within touching distance of Pep Guardiola’s side. The Reds came out 4-0 winners when the teams met at Anfield in November. This time, however, Arsenal will be no walkover as Mikel Arteta’s team have won all of their last five league matches and lost just one of their last 11.

Arsenal occupy the fourth and final UEFA Champions League qualifying spot and have three games in hand over the three teams directly below them. Victory for the Gunners will be critical for their Champions League ambitions, meanwhile Liverpool need three points to keep the pressure firmly on Man City.

Both Premier League title contenders are in the hat for the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals and they have each advanced to the FA Cup quarters which take place this weekend. Man City make the trip to the south coast for a date with Southampton, whilst Liverpool travel to Championship outfit Nottingham Forest.

City and Liverpool are guaranteed to play each other at least once more this season, with a potential title-deciding clash set for April 10 at the Etihad Stadium. Provided both teams progress in the domestic and continental cups, there is a growing possibility they could come up against one another up to four times in the space of seven weeks.
