European Watch – How are Europe’s Top Leagues progressing?

Last week, 365Scores wrote an article discussing what’s at stake in the Premier League and the latest developments in the title race. This week, it’s time to discuss the title races in all of Europe’s other top divisions.

With each passing matchday, the drama unfolds, and contenders emerge while others falter in their pursuit of glory. From the sun-drenched pitches of Spain to the storied stadiums of Italy, the race for the title is heating up, with clubs vying for domestic supremacy and the bragging rights that come with it. In this analysis, we’ll delve into the current standings, assess the form of key contenders, and identify the frontrunners poised to clinch the coveted crown in their respective leagues.

Ligue 1:

Title Challengers: PSG

There is no challenger to PSG this year, they are by far and away the best team in the league. Sat 11 points above second place Brest, the title should be a formality for PSG this year as they will seek to prioritise the Champions League in what appears to be Mbappé’s final season.

Champions League Contenders: Brest, Monaco, Nice, Lille, Lens, Rennes, Reims, Marseille

When there are no title challengers, it is inevitable that there will be a host of teams fighting for European spots. And there has been a changing of the guard. No Lyon involved in the European fight and Marseille struggling, space has been created for emerging teams such as Brest. Last year, Lens qualified for Europe for the first time in 20 years, this year, Brest may qualify for Europe for the first time in their history!

Player of the Season: Kylian Mbappé

The four-time Ligue 1 Player of the Year looks set to win it again. He is unstoppable and in his final season at PSG, he’s going to go out with a bang.

Serie A:

Title Challengers: Inter Milan….. Juventus (maybe)

Inter Milan are bossing Serie A and it appears they will be crowned as champions come May. They’ve remarkably only conceded 12 goals in 26 games, a credit to Alessandro Bastoni and their watertight defence.

Champions League Contenders: AC Milan, Bologna, Atalanta, Roma, Fiorentina, Lazio, Napoli

AC Milan are leading the pack, but only eight points separate 4th and 9th, exciting! Napoli have had a major fall-off since last year’s heroics and are clearly suffering from the loss of Spalletti, but thanks to Osimhen and Khvicha, they still have a chance.

Player of the Season: Hakan Çalhanoğlu

The self-proclaimed best deep-lying midfielder in the world is having a terrific season, he would’ve needed one after that statement he made! He’s bossing the midfield week after week and is leading Inter to the title.

Current Top Scorer: Lautaro Martinez (23)

Bundesliga:

Title Challengers: Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich

Leverkusen are leading the pack… and by eight points too! But don’t expect Bayern to give up any point soon. Harry Kane can’t believe it. He thought winning the league at Bayern was a forgone conclusion. After all, they’ve won it every year since 2013. Yet Xabi Alonso’s Bayern Leverkusen side hasn’t come to play around and there’s a reason why Alonso is one of the most highly sought-after managers in world football at the moment. Leverkusen play fantastic, swashbuckling football and will be hoping to end their cursed record of five runners-up awards without a single Bundesliga title.

Champions League Contenders: Stuttgart, Dortmund, RB Leipzig

Stuttgart seem to have put themselves in pole position for a Champions League spot, it’s up to Dortmund and Leipzig to scrap it out for the other spot.

Player of the Season: Leroy Sané

Sané is wicked. He was incredible at Manchester City and he’s incredible at Bayern. Averaging almost a goal or assist every game, his link-up with the new arrival Harry Kane has been sensational. His pace, quick feet and lethal shot make him a nightmare to play against.

La Liga:

Title Challengers: Real Madrid and Girona

Usually, it’s Real and Barcelona, but this year it’s Real and Girona. Girona have surprised the entire footballing world by playing silky, possession-based football to be in the running for the title. With an unpretentious team made up of experienced veterans, if Girona go all the way, it will be a story for the ages.

Champions League Contenders: Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Athletic Club Bilbao

Barcelona have decided to part ways with Xavi at the end of the season as Barcelona, last season’s champions, are slipping behind Real Madrid. They’ve been good at times, but far too poor at others and will be satisfied at this point with a Champions League spot and a run in the competition this season.

Player of the Season: Jude Bellingham

Bellingham has taken the league by storm. He’s been the best player and is the top scorer. Even missing most of the month of February through illness, he remains at the top of the list. It won’t be long until the ‘Belligol’ returns and Real could do with his superpowers as they fight for the title at the backend of the season.

Current Top Scorer: Jude Bellingham (16)
