Carabao Cup Final Preview: Liverpool and Chelsea face off in the Final again!

As the Carabao Cup Final approaches, football fans around the globe brace themselves for yet another thrilling showdown between two English giants: Liverpool and Chelsea. This marks the third time in three years that these powerhouses collide in a final, following intense battles in both the FA and Carabao Cups back in 2022. Notably, Liverpool emerged victorious on both occasions, sealing their triumphs with nerve-wracking penalty shootouts. With their storied rivalry reignited, anticipation mounts as these titans prepare to clash once again for cup glory.

Team News:

Liverpool’s team are really in the wars. The Reds will be without key goalkeeper Alisson as he battles with a muscle injury. Trent Alexander-Arnold has suffered a lateral collateral ligament injury whilst Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones also battle injuries. Midfielders Thiago and Dominik Szoboszlai will also be out.

Their potent attack may also be thwarted as Darwin Nuñez and Mohamed Salah are both suffering from knocks, but they may well be bandaged up and fit for the final.

As for Chelsea, they are without the perpetually injured Reece James but Malo Gusto is back in contention. Wesley Fofana remains sidelined as well as goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. Veteran Thiago Silva is also suffering from an injury.

Key Players:

Liverpool: Virgil van Dijk

For Liverpool, the towering figure of Virgil van Dijk embodies resilience and leadership. His imposing presence in defence, coupled with his exceptional ability to read the game, has solidified Liverpool’s backline since his return from injury. Van Dijk’s calmness under pressure and unwavering composure in high-stakes encounters make him a linchpin in Jurgen Klopp’s tactical setup. As Liverpool brace for another monumental showdown against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup Final, van Dijk’s experience of such grand occasions will be invaluable, especially in the absence of other seasoned campaigners. With his astute positioning and ability to marshal the defence, van Dijk will be instrumental in nullifying Chelsea’s attacking threats and steering Liverpool towards cup glory once again.

Chelsea: Enzo Fernandez

For Chelsea, the emergence of Enzo Fernandez has been a beacon of hope during a transitional period. The Argentine midfielder’s creative vision, precise passing, and ability to control the tempo of the game have played a crucial role in Chelsea’s recent resurgence. Fernandez’s presence in the midfield has added a layer of stability and flair, making him a linchpin in Pochettino’s tactical plans. Against Liverpool at Anfield, Chelsea will need a metronome to control the tempo and that man is Fernandez.

As Chelsea look to win a trophy amidst their mostly calamitous season, Fernandez’s performance will be key in steering the Blues towards success.

  • Unbelievably, seven of the previous eight meetings between Liverpool and Chelsea in all competitions have finished level (including the two domestic cup finals in 2022 which went to penalties).

  • Only once out of the last six games between the pair have more than two goals been scored.

  • Liverpool are unbeaten in their last eight games
