Can AC Milan Capture A First Scudetto Since 2011?

AC Milan sit atop the Serie A table after 28 games played, and are eyeing their first league title in 11 years. They are currently on their longest title drought since 1979, but manager Stefano Pioli and his players have the chance to bring the Scudetto to the red half of Milan for the first time in more than a decade.

Last year it was Inter that ended their own ten-year Serie A title duck as Antonio Conte led the Nerazzurri to their first Scudetto since José Mourinho’s historic treble season in 2010 (Serie A – Coppa Italia – Champions League).

Milan Clubs Battling It Out For Scudetto

In the current season Milan have collected 60 points with 18 wins in 28 games, while Inter have 58 points. The Rossoneri have been on top of their game away from home, winning 10 and losing just 1 of 14.
On Sunday, Milan traveled to Napoli for a crucial away clash against Napoli. Olivier Giroud scored the only goal of the game to give the visitors a precious three points in Naples and the top spot in the Serie A.

Inter, meanwhile, have won little over half of their away games this term, with seven wins and five draws from 13 outings. Despite enduring below-par form on their travels, they are still fighting at the top of the table. Inter were the top-performing Italian team in 2021, accumulating 10 points more than next-best Atalanta and 17 points more than Milan. They won 32 of their 43 Serie A matches last year and tasted defeat only three times.

Fast forward and it seems that Simone Inzaghi’s side have slightly fallen off in 2022. Inter have three wins, three draws and two defeats in eight league games since the turn of the year. On the other hand,  Milan have won five and lost one of nine matches in the Italian top-flight this year and are two points above their neigbours, albeit the men in blue have one game in hand over their city rivals. Napoli are three points adrift of the league leaders.

Zlatan Wants Trophies

Last week Zlatan Ibrahimović stated to the media that he is reluctant to retire from football without getting his hands on silverware with AC Milan. Ibrahimović was a Milan player when the club last celebrated Serie A success in 2011 and the Swedish striker is adamant to triumph with the club once more before he hangs up his boots. At 40 years old, Zlatan is two years into a second permanent spell with the Rossoneri and he has netted eight league goals this season, Milan’s joint-highest scorer along with Giroud and Rafael Leão.

When the Milan rivals clashed in November, the two sides could not be separated in a 1-1 stalemate. The return fixture in February saw AC prevail, 2-1, thanks to a brace by Giroud. The two also recently met in the Coppa Italia semi-finals, where the first leg ended with a goalless draw. The second leg takes place on April 20 at the San Siro.
