Why Super Bowl 2025 Is Historic
Super Bowl 2025 promises a historic matchup as the Kansas City Chiefs can win their third-straight Super Bowl, which has never been done in NFL history. The last team to three-peat was the 1965-67 Packers, but they did not refer to the final game as the Super Bowl until the 1966 season.
The Chiefs are already making history by reaching the game as it is their fifth Super Bowl in the last six seasons, another record. They are the first team ever to repeat and get a Super Bowl for the third year in a row too.
This matchup is also historic as the Eagles and Chiefs are meeting for the fourth season in a row since 2021, something that’s never been done before between an AFC and NFC team since the 1970 merger. This is the second time they’ll meet in a Super Bowl after doing so in Super Bowl LVII two years ago.
The Eagles will attempt to make history by avoiding a sweep, which has happened every other time a Super Bowl rematch happened within an 8-year window:
- The Pittsburgh Steelers were 2-0 in Super Bowls against the Dallas Cowboys (1975 and 1978 seasons).
- The San Francisco 49ers were 2-0 in Super Bowls against the Cincinnati Bengals (1981 and 1988 seasons).
- The Dallas Cowboys were 2-0 in Super Bowls against the Buffalo Bills (1992 and 1993 seasons).
- The New York Giants were 2-0 in Super Bowls against the New England Patriots (2007 and 2011 seasons).
- The Kansas City Chiefs were 2-0 in Super Bowls against the San Francisco 49ers (2019 and 2023 seasons).

Teams and Playoff Journey
AFC Top Seed: Kansas City Chiefs (17-2 Record)
The Super Bowl is becoming old hat for the Kansas City Chiefs, who were the preseason favorite (+500 odds) to three-peat after already winning the Super Bowl in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. We already knew the Chiefs are a dynasty after winning last season, but they can really enhance their legacy with one more win here.
Coming into the 2024 NFL season, there were signs that this could be the strongest, most balanced team in the Patrick Mahomes era if the offense improved with the additions of Xavier Worthy and Hollywood Brown, and if Steve Spagnuolo’s defense remained one of the best units in the league.
But injuries threatened to derail the three-peat early. Patrick Mahomes started the season by throwing a head-scratching interception every week, but at the end of a pick in Los Angeles in Week 4, he accidentally ran into the knee of wide receiver Rashee Rice, tearing his ACL and ending his season.
The Chiefs also didn’t have Hollywood Brown until December after a preseason injury, missed starting running back Isiah Pacheco for much of the season, and No. 2 corner Jaylen Watson, who was replacing L’Jarius Sneed (Titans), was injured in October.
However, the Chiefs kept finding ways to win the close games at a historic rate before Brown, Pacheco, and Watson later returned. Mahomes led seven game-winning drives to lead the league, and the Chiefs have now won 17 consecutive one-score games, four more than the previous NFL record.
Kansas City’s only loss with its starters all season was Week 11 in Buffalo, a 30-21 loss after Josh Allen ran for a 26-yard touchdown on a crucial fourth-and-2 in the game’s final minutes.

But the Chiefs kept winning despite having to play three different kickers and start four different left tackles, including moving All-Pro guard Joe Thuney to left tackle late in the season. The Chiefs secured the No. 1 seed on Christmas, then rested key starters in a Week 18 blowout loss (38-0) against Denver.
The Chiefs were 15-2, tied for the most wins ever for a defending Super Bowl champion. But the team’s starters faced a historic 24-day layoff between Christmas and the divisional round playoffs due to the scheduling quirk of playing on a Wednesday and resting starters with the bye week to come.
While rust was a concern, the Chiefs never trailed against Houston and won 23-14 to advance to the AFC Championship Game for the seventh season in a row. They outlasted the Bills in a huge rematch, winning 32-29 after Mahomes led his seventh game-winning drive in his playoff career to improve to 17-3 in postseason starts.
But going back to the Week 2 win over Cincinnati when a 4th-and-16 penalty for pass interference on the Bengals extended the game before the Chiefs won on a field goal, the other story for this team besides the three-peat has been this manufactured officiating conspiracy.
The idea that the Chiefs are getting preferential treatment by officials to win these games is not bounded in reality, but the fatigue of watching one team win this much and so often by one-score margins has fueled a lot of hatred for the Chiefs, painting them as the villains in this Super Bowl 2025 matchup with the Eagles.
But the Chiefs will take that role into New Orleans with a chance to do something no other team has done before, which would be the defining achievement of any team in the Super Bowl era.
NFC Top Seed: Philadelphia Eagles (17-3 Record)
It was in November 2023 that we talked about the possibility of a Super Bowl rematch between the Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, who have been the best teams in their conference over the last three years.
At that time, the Chiefs and Eagles had the best records in their respective conferences. It would only be the second time in history that teams met in the Super Bowl in back-to-back seasons, following in the footsteps of the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills in 1992-93.
But while the Eagles defeated the Chiefs that night in Arrowhead to improve to 9-1, their season would soon take a turn for the worse after both teams didn’t look quite as sharp as they did in 2022 when they were both 14-3 and met in a classic Super Bowl, won 38-35 by the Chiefs.
After a 10-1 start, the 2023 Eagles crashed out and finished 11-7, neither winning their division nor a playoff game after they were embarrassed in the first round in Tampa Bay. Meanwhile, the Chiefs held up their end of the bargain by rebounding to get back and win the Super Bowl.
But the Eagles approached 2024 with an aggressive task of replacing their coordinator spots with quality hires in Kellen Moore (offense) and Vic Fangio (defense). They knew the offense had many pieces in place, but they signed running back Saquon Barkley in free agency after the rival Giants declined to give him a new deal.
The defense was the main reason for the 2023 collapse, so it was up to Fangio to get that unit with its young pieces (Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, and rookie corners Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean) on track. The Eagles improved from No. 30 to No. 2 in points allowed while allowing the fewest yards and first downs this season. Fangio did his job by making this an elite defense.
The offense is still one of the best even after losing center Jason Kelce to retirement. The Tush Push may have lost a step without him, but the Eagles found a new identity in Barkley, who rushed for 2,005 yards in by far the best season of his career. Including the playoffs, Barkley has rushed for seven touchdowns of 60-plus yards, smashing the old record of four such scores in a season.
With 30 more yards in Super Bowl LIX, Barkley will set the single-season rushing record for NFL history and should finish as the first 2,500-yard back.
But the Eagles were just 2-2 in September before going into the bye week. Since then, they are 15-1 with the only loss coming in Washington in a game where Jalen Hurts was concussed in the first quarter. The Eagles lost two games this season where a dropped pass (Barkley against the Falcons and DeVonta Smith against the Commanders) would have iced the game for them. Their only bad performance was in Tampa Bay without their wide receivers.

The Eagles are 15-0 when Hurts and A.J. Brown both finish and start a game. But going into the playoffs, Hurts’ health was a concern after the concussion late in the year. He did not throw the ball much late in the season as the Eagles seemed more interested in getting Barkley close to the rushing record.
But in the wild-card game against the Packers, the Eagles easily won the turnover battle and that was enough to produce a 22-10 win. Then in the divisional round against the Rams, they had three touchdown runs of 40-plus yards. But Hurts also took a career-high 7.0 sacks, and he injured his knee on one of the plays. The Rams were 13 yards away from stealing the game with an incredible comeback, but Fangio’s defense shut the door in the snow in a 28-22 win.
With concerns over Hurts’ knee for the NFC Championship Game, he left no doubt he was fine with three rushing touchdowns and his best passing game in weeks. Barkley also rushed for a 60-yard touchdown on his first carry and scored three touchdowns himself.
The Eagles set a Conference Championship Game record with 55 points in a 55-23 rout over Washington. Now we’ll see if the Eagles, who have won the turnover battle 10-0 this postseason, can get revenge for two years ago and stop the Chiefs from completing the three-peat that technically started against the Eagles in the 2022 season.
Viewing & Streaming Tips
TV Setup Tips for the Best Experience
Super Bowl 59 will broadcast live on Fox, so for the optimal television experience, you’ll want to make sure you have an HD connection to your local Fox affiliate ready to go. If you’re throwing a party, then you’ll need to adjust your TV to the best spot that the most people can get a good viewing angle.
Streaming Services & Language Options
For those without cable or a TV, there are many other options for streaming services to watch Super Bowl 2025.
You can stream the game on Fubo, which is currently offering a free trial. There is also the streaming service Tubi, which is always free, and it will stream Super Bowl LIX live on Fox on all mobile and internet-connected devices, including Smart TVs. Tubi is also home to many classic films, TV series, and obscure gems, so you’re really missing out if you don’t already have a free membership with Tubi.
Subscribers to NFL+ can also stream the game live on their mobile device. FoxSports.com will also broadcast the Fox broadcast online.
For those Spanish-speaking fans who wish to hear the game in that language, your best bets are Telemundo and Fox Deportes.
Hosting a Super Bowl Party
It wouldn’t be a Super Bowl party without the food, a little décor, and some games for fun (or a little money).
Food Ideas
A Super Bowl party? In this economy? Yes, you’ll want to be a little economical in your food choices to feed the maximum number of people, but that’s why you can never go wrong with chips/dip and pretzels before pizza and wings.
But if you’re going for a smaller get-together, why not try something a little less traditional that could serve as a new family tradition for Super Bowl Sunday? Homemade lasagna works well in this setting, and it’s even better at halftime once it’s been in the fridge for over three hours and settles together.
Décor Themes
If you’re a neutral observer, your place could look like Christmas with the red (Chiefs) and green (Eagles) these teams bring to the table. But feel free to decorate as much or as little as possible with team colors or something else football related.
Games & Activities
Let’s face it. Not everyone at your Super Bowl party is there for the game itself, but you could play some games during it to keep their interest up.
You could play a Super Bowl BINGO game where you fill up cards scrambled with different outcomes and see who can hit BINGO by marking them when they happen. Here are some suggestions for BINGO entries:
- Tom Brady mentions “juice” during the broadcast
- Taylor Swift reaction shot
- Kendrick Lamar plays “Not Like Us” at halftime
- Saquon Barkley breaks a 50-yard run
- The Chiefs stop the Tush Push
- Eagles coach Nick Sirianni cries during the national anthem
- Big Dom, the Eagles’ head of security, is seen on camera
- Xavier Worthy gets a rushing attempt
- Patrick Mahomes runs for a first down on third down
You could also make predictions on the game to see who comes the closest to getting the final score right. You could play Super Bowl squares with the scores at the end of the quarters.
You could always just place bets on sportsbooks too to see who makes the best Same Game Parlay since it’s the last real NFL game until September. Remember to have fun and be responsible.
Fun Super Bowl Facts & Traditions
This is only the 59th Super Bowl in history, but there is still a rich history of Super Bowl facts and traditions out there. For instance, did you know teams wearing white uniforms are 37-21 in the big game? The Chiefs will don their road whites again for this one with the Eagles on their home greens, the same matchup from two years ago.
But here are some other Super Bowl facts worth knowing:
Gatorade Shower Odds
The Super Bowl is the most bet-on sporting event of the year with more prop picks than you can imagine. There’s even a betting market out there for the Chiefs winning and Travis Kelce proposing marriage to Taylor Swift at the podium.
But you can also bet on which color the Gatorade will be that gets poured on the winning coach. These are the current odds for that from Bovada:
- Purple (+125)
- Lime/Green/Yellow (+225)
- Orange (+450)
- Blue (+525)
- Red (+800)
- Clear/Water (+1000)
- No Liquid Poured on Coach (+1800)
For reference, the Chiefs have gone purple in back-to-back years, so doing it again for the three-peat would make sense. The Eagles also used lime/green in 2018 when they won Super Bowl 52 against the Patriots.

Super Bowl Trophy
Winners of the Super Bowl receive the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named after the Green Bay coaching legend who won the first two Super Bowls in 1966 and 1967. Following Lombardi’s death in 1970, the trophy was officially named after him.
It was Tiffany & Co. who made the initial design of the trophy in 1966 on a sketch on a cocktail napkin. The trophy is cast every year out of sterling silver. It stands 22 inches tall and weighs about 7 pounds.
Historical Super Bowl MVPs
Historically, the Super Bowl MVP award has gone to the game’s most valuable or outstanding player. Quarterbacks have a strong bias to winning the award, having won 33 of the 59 Super Bowl MVP awards.
The reason the number is 59 is because a co-MVP situation was awarded in Super Bowl XII (1977 season) when Randy White and Harvey Martin, a couple of defenders for the Dallas Cowboys, shared the Super Bowl MVP in their 27-10 win against Denver.
To date, the only player to ever win Super Bowl MVP for a losing team was Dallas linebacker Chuck Howley in Super Bowl V.
Tom Brady holds the record with five Super Bowl MVP awards, but Patrick Mahomes could already move into second place with his fourth. Mahomes joins Joe Montana as the only other players to win at least three Super Bowl MVP awards.
Another favorite for the award this year is Saquon Barkley seeing as how Super Bowl LIX will be his 28th birthday too. Barkley could end the streak of no running backs winning Super Bowl MVP since Terrell Davis for the 1997 Broncos.
