In a clash where every pass, tackle, and goal carries immense significance, the stage is set for a showdown that will undoubtedly shape the destiny of the Premier League title.
Team News:
Good news for Liverpool fans, Mohamed Salah has returned to action and will be fit to face Manchester City! The Egyptian King loves facing the Citizens and he has come back from injury at a critical time. Despite that, Liverpool are still in the wars and have had a day less than City to prepare for this fixture. Caoimhin Kelleher will remain in goal as Alisson continues to suffer from a hamstring injury. Ibrahim Konaté picked up an injury midweek against Sparta Prague and will miss out. Diogo Jota is also out and Jayden Danns is a doubt, putting an increased burden on an only recently returned Salah. Trent Alexander-Arnold won’t return to the pitch until the end of the month as he battles with knee issues. Ben Doak, Ryan Gravenberch, Joel Matip, Thiago, and Curtis Jones all remain out as well.
Manchester City are dealing with almost an entirely fit squad. Matheus Nunes dislocated his finger in the Champions League fixture midweek against Leipzig, so he may well miss out. City will also be without Jack Grealish, who injured himself on his return to action last week at Luton. Defender Josko Gvardiol has now returned from injury.
Key Players:
Liverpool: Virgil van Dijk
Two weeks ago against Chelsea, Virgil van Dijk almost single-handedly won the Carabao Cup for Chelsea. With a bunch of players who had never played for Liverpool before, let alone at Wembley in a cup final, VVD led the team to victory and scored the winner. He epitomises defensive excellence, combining immaculate positioning with impeccable reading of the game, and that will be vital against Manchester City. His commanding aerial presence and ability to neutralise opposition attacks have earned him distinctions as one of the best defenders in the world. His capacity to organise the backline, regardless of who he plays alongside, will be crucial in keeping City’s potent attacking threats at bay.
Manchester City: Phil Foden
Phil Foden has made the step from ‘excellent’ to ‘world-class’ this year. Last week, Foden announced that he’d made said step by scoring twice against Manchester United in the derby and teasing their defence the whole game. Foden epitomises the modern attacking midfielder with his exquisite ball control, vision, and ability to unlock stubborn defences. Against Liverpool’s defence, Foden’s creativity and incisive passing will be pivotal in breaching the Reds’ backline and unlocking opportunities for Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez. As a key cog in City’s attacking machinery, Foden’s performance could well dictate the outcome of this high-stakes encounter, as he seeks to leave yet another mark on the title race.
- Guardiola and Klopp have encountered each other more than they’ve encountered any other manager (29). Klopp’s 11 wins are the most by any manager against Guardiola, while Guardiola’s 10 victories are the most by any manager against Klopp.
- Liverpool are on a six-game win streak. City are on a five-game win streak but are unbeaten in their last 20 since a loss to Aston Villa in December.
Manchester City are favourites to win at 6/5 on bet365. Liverpool are priced at 15/8 on bet365.
