Five things we learnt from the Premier League’s opening weekend

The Premier League roared back into action this past weekend, reigniting the passion, drama, and intrigue that has made it one of the world’s most-watched football leagues. From thrilling goals to tactical surprises and emerging talents, the season’s commencement did not disappoint. Here are five key takeaways from the Premier League’s opening weekend that could set the tone for the campaigns ahead.

1. Newcastle are not messing around this year…

When €60m midfielder Sandro Tonali signed from AC Milan earlier this summer, many commented that the Italian looked rather dismayed to have landed in rainy Tyneside. Six minutes into Newcastle’s opening fixture against highly-rated Aston Villa, Tonali didn’t look anything other than euphoric as his timely volley crashed into the far corner.

Newcastle were rampant the entire game and blew Villa away. They had THIRTEEN shots on target, five of which they scored from. Alexander Isak looked incredible, scoring twice. Antony Gordon played as if he had something to prove. Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson were bright off the bench. The atmosphere in St James Park was electric. Newcastle are going to be a real force this season. Next stop, Manchester City..!

2. Bernd Leno is a MONSTER

Everton really should have beaten Fulham, yet the Cottagers took all three points and have a clean sheet to show for it. The man responsible? Bernd Leno. The German goalkeeper made nine saves, including sensational one-on-one stops against Abdoulaye Doucouré and Neal Maupay. He prevented 3.31 goals which would have been expected to have been scored. Sensational.

3. Chelsea and Liverpool both need defensive midfielders… but mostly Liverpool

Chelsea and Liverpool played out a thrilling draw on Sunday. There was some attacking prowess on display, and some gritty midfield performances but in truth, it was a reminder why both teams are on the hunt for defensive midfielders. Both teams lacked real stability and control of the game. It constantly ebbed and flowed.

Since Sunday, Chelsea have acted quickly to sign Moises Caicedo in a deal that could become the British transfer record at €115m. They have also agreed a €60m deal to sign Romeo Lavia from Southampton. Two excellent choices, both of whom Liverpool were interested in signing.

Liverpool are still in the market and have expressed interest in Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouaméni but Los Blancos have no intention of selling the Frenchman.

4. Bukayo Saka is one of the best wingers in the world

Bukayo Saka just gets better and better. He has been refining his game since he burst onto the scene in 2018. Last season, he scored 14 Premier League goals and bagged 11 assists, showcasing why he is one of the best wingers in the world. He has started this season with a bang as well. His play is assured, his demeanour is confident, and he always looks likely to produce magic. His goal was splendid. Saka picked up the ball on the right-wing, cut inside and curled a peach into the top left corner. Ex-Gunner Matt Turner stood no chance!

5. André Onana is certainly a change from David de Gea

Andre Onana made his first appearance for Manchester United in their 1-0 win over Wolverhampton. Whilst the Red Devils were not at their best, Onana had a very sturdy first game. He made some important saves, making six in total. What was most notable was his composure on the ball and his desire to claim crosses, something that his predecessor De Gea was reticent to do. He elicited an enormous cheer from the United faithful when he rose above all to clutch the ball into his palms and into his grasp.

However, whilst De Gea may have been timid in collecting loose balls, Onana may even be overly keen. With the full-time whistle approaching, Onana dashed off his six-yard line to punch a cross, yet knocked out Sasa Kalajdzic in the process. Somehow, a penalty wasn’t awarded.

As the final whistle blew on the opening weekend, it became clear that this Premier League season promises to be as unpredictable and enthralling as ever. With lessons learned and first impressions made, teams will now recalibrate and gear up for the long journey ahead. One weekend down, but the best is yet to come. Here’s to a season of unparalleled excitement!
