Euro 2024 Team of the Tournament

As the curtain falls on Euro 2024, fans are left with unforgettable memories of thrilling matches, standout performances, and Spain’s triumphant 2-1 victory over England in the final. La Roja proved to be the dominant force throughout the tournament, and this is reflected in our Team of the Tournament, which features several of their key players who played pivotal roles in their success.

While our selected formation may not be the most conventional, it aims to accommodate the best talents from the competition, ensuring that no exceptional performance goes unrecognized. Here is our Euro 2024 Team of the Tournament, celebrating the finest footballers who lit up the European stage.

Goalkeeper – Mike Maignan (France)

Maignan is a serious goalkeeper. The AC Milan man has taken the reigns from Hugo Lloris and he has done so with aplomb.

He kept four clean sheets in his first five games, conceding just once in a match against Poland. Unfortunately, there was absolutely nothing he could’ve done about Lamine Yamal’s beauty that curled past him and kissed the top corner.

Right-Back – Kyle Walker (England)

Walker has always been dependable for England and this tournament was no different. Walker helped keep England’s defense watertight on their way to the final. His pace still hasn’t slowed and it means that teams struggle to get in behind England as he’ll sweep everything up. He’s like a hoover. Well done, Kyle.

Centre-Back – William Saliba (France)

Saliba is a true Rolls-Royce of a center-back. He strikes fear into opposition strikers and confidence into his own goalkeepers. That’s what you want in a defender.

France’s defensive record was imperious this tournament and you can thank Saliba for that.

Defender – Aymeric Laporte (Spain)

Laporte was written off by large sections of the Spanish media before the tournament. They disparaged him by saying that an Al-Nassr player in the Saudi Pro League won’t be up to Euro standard. Boy were they wrong and didn’t Laporte let them know? Shortly after the final, Laporte hit back at the critics on Instagram with receipts of all who dared to knock him.
I guess the apology now has to be as loud as the disrespect because he was fantastic. He played as the Laporte who won countless trophies at Manchester City. At Euro 2024, he added a special new trophy.

Left-Back – Marc Cucurella (Spain)

Gary Neville said that Cucurella would be one of the reasons why Spain may not make it all the way to glory. In fact, he was one of the reasons he was.

Cucurella has his doubters. After all, he didn’t have an incredible season with Chelsea. He was solid, if unremarkable. Yet at Euro 2024 he was sensational. He cut out the silly fouls. His buildup play was immense. He even assisted the winning goal in the final. Kudos to you, Marc!

Defensive Midfielder – Rodri (Spain)

The Player of the Tournament, Rodri is simply too good. He came off injured in the final, but his work was done in the first six matches. The footballing deity rested on the seventh.

His passing was incredible, boasting a 93% pass success. He made 2.2 tackles a game. He scored. He progressed the ball. He also did get nutmegged by Jude Bellingham in the final, but we’ll let him off. He’s incredible.

Centre-Midfielder – Xavi Simons (Netherlands)

Xavi Simons’ name has been thrown around for so long that it’s easy to forget that the boy is still just 21. Yet at 21, he’s an extremely talented footballer. At Euro 2024, he showed it.

He scored once and laid on three assists for his teammates. He’s technically sound and he has a confidence about him that shows that he means business, he’s there to win. After a season at RB Leipzig, he’s ready to tear it up for PSG.

Attacking Midfielder – Dani Olmo

Olmo’s stock has just shot up like a crescendo. He only came into the starting lineup from the third game, and then he impressed so much against Albania that he started every game since.

He scored or assisted in four straight games on the way to the final, oozing class throughout. Against Germany, the host nation, he shone with both a goal and an assist. Olmo was excellent and he might have some interesting parties this summer in the likes of Barcelona and Manchester City.

Left-Winger – Cody Gakpo (Netherlands)

One of the sharers of the Golden Boot, Gakpo had a very bright tournament. With three important goals and an assist, the Dutchman meant business.

Gakpo’s goals came at critical points and he led the line well for the Dutch, despite having a slightly imbalanced midfield behind him due to the absence of Frenkie de Jong. With such a player back, Gakpo will explode.

Striker – Harry Kane (England)

Harry Kane makes it into our team here as both a finalist and a top scorer. Look, I’ll put it frankly, there were times when it looked like Harry Kane was running through treacle. This was not the same Kane we saw rip it up for Bayern Munich in the 2023/24 season. Yet he’s still deadly if you give him a chance and he finished with three goals, tied for the Golden Boot.

Right-Winger – Lamine Yamal (Spain)

Oh Lamine Yamal, wow, wow, wow. This man (boy) is incredible at football. The Young Player of the Tournament. Also the youngest! If you’d been hiding under a rock and didn’t know him before the tournament started, you definitely know him now.

For most of the tournament, Yamal was 16 (SIXTEEN) years of age and did his Spanish school exams as he simultaneously scored goals and assisted for fun. Madman. He had a goal involvement in every knockout game, including the final. This guy is the truth. The youngest elder. Beware, the future is now!
